The unit
Advanced implant dentistry is about more than technical skill. It requires the ability to assess complexity, justify treatment decisions, adapt when challenges arise, and recognise when a case falls beyond your current scope of practice.
In this unit, you’ll explore the principles that underpin advanced implant treatment, including hard and soft tissue augmentation, management of compromised dentitions, treatment in the aesthetic zone, alternative implant strategies and the role of digital workflows in improving accuracy and predictability. You’ll consider how anatomical limitations, biological compromise, prosthetic demands and patient expectations influence case selection and treatment planning.
The unit also places strong emphasis on professional responsibility. Advanced procedures carry greater biological and technical risk, and outcomes are often highly dependent on operator experience, mentorship and appropriate multidisciplinary support. You’ll be encouraged to reflect critically on your own competence, understand when referral is appropriate, and make decisions that are safe, ethical and evidence-based.
By the end of this unit, you’ll have a stronger framework for evaluating complex implant cases, comparing treatment options and planning advanced procedures with greater clinical judgement.
What you will learn
This unit has been designed to help you develop higher-level thinking in implant dentistry. You’ll learn how to critically evaluate advanced implant procedures, understand their indications and limitations, and apply structured decision-making frameworks to complex cases.
You’ll also explore hard and soft tissue augmentation, implants in anatomically or aesthetically challenging sites, compromised dentitions, digital planning, guided surgery and complication management. Just as importantly, you’ll consider how to recognise clinical limitations, select cases appropriately and refer where required.
It’s an advanced, reflective unit that supports the development of safe, ethical and evidence-informed implant practice, helping you move beyond routine treatment planning towards more complex clinical decision-making.
