Successful implant therapy does not begin with implant placement alone. It begins with a clear understanding of the periodontal environment and the biological factors that can influence long-term stability.
In this unit, you’ll explore the relationship between periodontal health and dental implant treatment, including how active or historical periodontal disease can affect implant survival, complication risk and the development of peri-implant disease. You’ll examine contemporary periodontal diagnosis, including staging and grading, and learn how these findings inform patient risk assessment and treatment sequencing.
The unit also looks closely at the biological differences between periodontal and peri-implant tissues, including vascularity, connective tissue attachment and host immune response. These principles are then connected to practical clinical decision-making, including when to stabilise periodontal disease, how to optimise hard and soft tissue conditions, and how to plan maintenance protocols for higher-risk patients.
By the end of this unit, you’ll have a stronger framework for assessing, planning and maintaining implant treatment in periodontally compromised patients.
